WikiTree: The Single Family Tree
By: Charlotte Shockey, WikiTree Ambassador

You may have tried a bunch of different genealogy sites to add your family tree to and wonder why should you try one more well... WikiTree is completely FREE! The founder even has pledged that WikiTree will always be free. Not only is this site free they are the best when it comes to genealogical collaboration, working together to grow an accurate single family tree through not only traditional sources but also with the help of DNA. We currently have 415,337 genealogists on WikiTree with 13,799,474 profiles (the numbers are constantly going up).

There are several steps to go through in order to start adding to the single family tree. There is a 9-Point Honor Code you have to “sign” before you can Volunteer then add TAGs to show you are there for genealogy to become confirmed. Once you are confirmed you can start adding your family tree. Don’t be nervous as we started a new system that after confirmation walks you through steps of WikiTree so you get the most out of it.

If you've taken a DNA test, WikiTree puts your test results into action for genealogy. They don’t upload RAW data but connects to your DNA tests you’ve taken by way of GEDMatch and what type of tests you’ve completed from multiple companies. WikiTree has a great system that populates the DNA tests out into the tree. For example, your mtDNA test shows on all the profiles of your maternal line and those who would share mtDNA with you. This enables you to have a great way to create DNA sources to DNA confirm ancestors.

In working to make WikiTree the most accurate single family tree there is a request, per the 9-Point Honor Code, to add sources to profiles that are added. For the profiles that are unsourced there are challenges to make sure profiles are sourced to back up the information on each profile. Back in October we had the first ever Source-A-Thon which lasted for 72 hours! I personally only slept about 14 hours that entire time and but for a short period of going to work I worked endlessly to make sure profiles had at least one source on them. I ended up sourcing 1,018 profiles and came in 2nd place but they always have monthly Sourcerer Challenges and on Saturday’s they have “mini source-a-thons” that last 24 hours.

Are you interested in a certain project of genealogical interest? There are many projects on WikiTree such as Acadians, European Aristocrats, Huguenot Migration, Military and War, etc. We even have an Adoption Angels project to help those who are adopted to find their family. WikiTree even has location projects also.

This is all just a taste of what WikiTree is all about and I hope if you are not already a member that you decide to join WikiTree as we are a great community of collaborating genealogists. www.wikitree.com
