Websites for Storing and Sharing Genealogy Research

Some time back, I had written about "stand alone" data base programs for storing your genealogy research.    (RootsMagic, Legancy, etc. etc).    This article will be naming some online sites to store your genealogy.      I will touch on a few of the options.    If you all have other options, information, etc., please let me know.

I am going to list them in alphabetical order - which means I won't be listing in them in any order of preference.     If I have a personal opinion about any of them, I will write it in the description.      The $ sign by the name means it cost money to join.

 Ancestry Member Trees $

Join the genealogy research movement by starting a member tree on Ancestry.com. With features that can help connect long-lost family together, billions of genealogy records and a huge user network, it’s no wonder that Ancestry is one of the most popular websites for storing and sharing genealogy information and research.  Like any other tree(s) shared - everything has to still be verified, checked, and proven before you add it to your tree.   The hints on ancestry are very helpful also!   Care has to be taken to be sure it belongs to your person.   Recently I was working on a tree.    One family had four generations of males with the SAME name!   Sometimes they had a SR, JR, III, IV by their names.  Sometimes they didn't.   Then sometimes they had I, II, III, IV.   The hints sometimes cannot tell which one of those four people the hint belongs to.    Therefore, I have to check each hint carefully to be sure it belongs to the person they have the hint showing for.    Believe me, I have gotten in trouble more times than I can count by accepting a wrong hint for a person!    But - I do find the hints extremely useful!    Another caution - every tree on Ancestry is not correct.   The information is only as correct as what is put into the tree!   Sometimes I have found a son being the father of the father!   Bottom line it is still up to us to verify each thing we put into our tree; but, the resources are great to consider for our tree(s).  I have several trees on Ancestry.

Facebook

I know this one will be an eye brow raising one. No, this wildly popular social-networking site isn’t just for teens with way too much time on their hands—not anymore. Genealogy groups and different pages like family names turn your Facebook page into a powerful tool for exchanging family tree information. It’s an ideal place to network with like-minded genealogists, historians, or people who just want to keep up with information.   The best example I can give here is our Historic Hineston site!   There is a mountain of information on this site!   I have learned more than I can tell you on this site!   I have several family surname groups on Facebook.

FamilySearch

As you enter information into the Family Tree, lines that have been researched by others instantly connect. The Family Tree gathers everything in one spot and creates one profile for everyone, as opposed to participants each having their own trees individually. The goal, according to FamilySearch, is to reduce research duplication.  There are a lot of documents, etc on Family Search!     During RootsTech they provide a special tool (Relative Finder) which is great and I have connected with a lot of cousins thru this tool.    I use this site also.

Flickr $

Here’s another site not specifically for genealogy that clever family historians are using—in this case, to post photos of ancestors, gravestones and more.   I use this site quite a bit and have found wonderful photos, etc for my research.

Geni $

A standout among family tree sharing sites with 45 million profiles, Geni was singled out by Time magazine as one of the 50 best Web sites in 2008 and honored on PC Magazine’s list of Best Free Software.   You add what you know and then invite family members to add what they know, etc.     I also use this site - not as much as some of the others; but, I do have a presence on there.

MyHeritage $

A descendant, if you will, of the old GenCircles pedigree website, MyHeritage hosts more than 6.4 million family sites. Besides free sites, it offers Family Tree Builder software, a fun celebrity look-alike photo search, and a recently upgraded genealogy metasearch tool that looks for results in up to 1,350 sites and databases.  They, like Ancestry, have DNA tests that connects with people.    Yes!  I have a tree on this site also!

Pinterest

Pinterest is a photo uploading and sharing website usually used for fashion or recipes. But smart genealogists are using it to make free family trees and to organize their genealogy research. Upload photos of your family (boards can be made private) or use Pinterest to keep different family recipes and research material in easy, separate boards.  And, Again, Yes!   I have a personal page and a Dyess Page on Pinterest.

TribalPages $

One of the first sites to make the leap from plain pedigree files to online family trees, TribalPages has grown to more than 350,000 family sites with 50 million names.

There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.

YES!   I have a tree on TribalPages - with 70329 names in this family tree.

WikiTree

Combining genealogy research with DNA, WikiTree allows you to participate in a global family tree. Add your own family to the 12 million profiles already edited by over 300,000 genealogists. The WikiTree Honor Code makes for a safe and easy-to-use website for all.  There are a lot of tools, activities on this site that makes it a great research tool.    YES!  I am a member and have a tree on WikiTree also!!

WeRelate

“Part encyclopedia, part social network,” this free wiki is sponsored by the Foundation for On-Line Genealogy in partnership with the Allen County (Ind.) Public Library. In addition to pages for more than 2 million people and families, WeRelate searches nearly 1 million sources, including microfilms and Web sites.     WeRelate ----  has pages for over 3,010,000 people and growing. WeRelate is supported by volunteers and your tax-deductible donations.   YES!  I have a presence on this site also.

In conclusion, I hope this has given some new ideas to help with your research / historical journey, or just for your interest.   Not everyone is interested in being a genealogist but everyone is interested in learning things about their past, community, etc.

Again, if you have suggestions, etc.,, please let me know.
