Guild of One Name Study - The Journey Starts With One Name
By: Carolyn Dyess Bales
Guild Member: 5916

Several years ago I joined the Guild of One Name Study and registered my two main surnames: Dyess (my maiden name) and Bonnette (my mother's maiden name). Why did I do this? I read about it and it certainly seemed like a great way to study my two main surnames. Also, the resources that were offered me thru the Guild helped me with my research.

I have always been a collector of my surname(s). Anytime I saw a Dyess (any spelling) and Bonnette (any spelling) I saved it. By joining the Guild it has given me a more “structured” method of keeping track of my registered surnames.

When I joined the Guild of One Name Study I did not know anyone. That has quickly changed. I have met many well known genealogy people – some online and some in person. I have learned so much.

About 7 years ago I was asked to be a Regional Representative for several states and it was named the Delta Region. Each November when I go to the DNA conference in Houston, I meet some of the Guild members who are also attending. This always is a great experience.

You maybe asking What is the Guild of One Name Study?
According to Wiki - The Guild of One-Name Studies is a charitable organization dedicated to promoting the public understanding of one-name (surname) studies and the preservation and accessibility of the resultant information. Founded in 1979 in Britain, the Guild has members all over the world, and is widely recognized as a center of excellence in one-name studies. A one-name study is a project researching facts about a surname and all the people who have held it, as opposed to a particular pedigree (the ancestors of one person) or descendancy (the descendants of one person or couple). The Guild brings together those with an interest in traditional documentary one-name studies and other forms of surname study such as DNA projects.

You can check to see if anyone is studying any of your surnames. Also you can determine if any of your surnames are registered. You have a chance and/or choice of registering any of your surnames. This page also answers several more of your questions:

Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office

Criminal scammers are at it again and local citizens are being targeted by phone calls threatening them with arrest and prosecution for failing to comply with jury service in federal or state courts.
In the calls, recipients are pressured to to bring a "fine payment" for missing jury duty to the Federal Courthouse in Alexandria. Then the victim receives a phone call to "expedite the process" to put the money on a GREEN DOT VISA CARD.
REMEMBER, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office or any other law enforcement agency will NEVER attempt to collect ANY monies and instruct the person to get a GREEN DOT VISA CARD.
Federal courts do not require anyone to provide any sensitive information in a telephone call or email. Most contact between a federal court and a prospective juror will be through the U.S. mail, and any phone contact by real court officials will not include requests for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information.
If you have been a victim of this "Jury Duty Scam", please contact your local law enforcement agency and make a report. Local and a Federal law enforcement are looking into these reports.
Remember, REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM!
