RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - A beloved former Oak Hill Elementary teacher celebrated her 100th birthday this weekend. Ms. Vivian Johnson taught third grade for 33 years, and was a substitute for 11 years after that.
Her church family threw a birthday bash for her on Saturday at Pine Ridge Baptist Church, and friends and former students lined up to visit with her. They shared memories from her class, and even got to enjoy some cake and refreshments.
Johnson said she was grateful to see so many familiar faces.
“They're no words to express the appreciation that I have,” said Johnson. “I cannot believe that this many people would remember me after this many years. And I’m thankful for their attendance today."
Sheriff William Earl Hilton even came to the party, he happens to be one of her former students.

Why Write Your Story Down

Do we have to question the worth of “our” story to write it down? Or do we write the story to get our message or idea
to keep the story alive and recorded? Sometimes we question the worth of our story but before we discard the idea, it will help to consider the facts.

1. Everything feels insignificant at first.

Sometimes when I start to write a story, an account of an incident, etc, it feels so insignificant. But the more I write the more comfortable I feel. The key is to “just begin”.
Every Story is Worth Telling!!

2. A story is more than a message.

A story creates a picture, creates a world, creates a story
that can be written down from generation to generation. A story gives insight to the past, the present, and even the future.

3. At least one person needs your story.

As we write we wonder who will want to read our story. Somewhere there is at least one person who is interested in our story. The main thing is to keep writing!!

4. The More you write the more it improves.

This is a fact of life. No discussion is probably needed here.

5. Writing helps to make sense of our lives.

Sometimes writing things down helps us “see” our lives and others more clearly. Therefore, we can make more sense from writing.

6. What can you do with your story?

First, at least one person wants to read your story -- -- ME!!!!

Second, there are so many experiences with everyone on  the Historic Hineston site. It would be wonderful if each person wrote one story about an experience in your life and share it. What a lot can be learned!!!

At the beginning of the year, I posted three stories. There were a lot of comments and sharing back and forth.
One story, Jodie Dyess Marler, brought a lot of comments sharing memories about Aunt Jodie. One thing was clear -- everyone loved her tea cakes. I inquired from my relatives and one first cousin, Jeanette DuBois Monk, had the recipe which I will share. Without that story the tea cake recipe would not have been shared. With this one example, you all can see what just one story can provide all the rest of us.

I cannot wait to see what experiences you all can provide and post. It is very exciting to think about what you all can share.
Looking forward to your story!!!!!!
