April 2018, a new standards book was release - 678 pages!.  This book is necessary for anyone who does research, builds trees, and wants to be sure the research standards are met.  

As we all know sometimes we have several pieces of documents that have different information on them.   How then do we determine which is the correct information?    How do we give weight to the documents?    For example:   A person's date of birth.  You might have several pieces of evidence with different dates of births.     This book helps guide you thru the decision process of what weight is given to each document and helps you work to a conclusion of what would be the correct date of birth or any other differences you might have on evidence:  i.e., A person's real name.    

The 21st century has seen an interest in the genealogy world:    TV programs, DNA companies advertising giving people hope to seek their roots.

Each of us want our research, our trees, our work to be the best we can provide.    We do not have to be a professional genealogist but our work must be of a professional standard.     Who will see our work?    Who will benefit from our work?     Personally, I hope my family, your family, and all other researchers can benefit from my work.    When you look at it, I want it to be the best it can be.   

There are sometimes online groups that will form and the book will be discussed for a period of time.     It helps when like minds come together and discuss what we got from each of the chapters in the book.   It also is free and it certainly saves us from going to a meeting outside our homes.  

One of my favorite chapters in the book is Chapter 12 - REASONING FROM EVIDENCE.  I have other favorites - Genetics for example!  But, Dr. Thomas W Jones genealogists detect and collect evidence.   

"We assess it, assemble it, test the assemblage, and transform it into a conclusion.    We reject the opposite approach, to blindly believe what sources say.   There is no middle ground.   No competent genealogist accepts any source or information item without assessing the qualities of the evidence it provides and determining its accuracy."
