Who are the Future Genealogists of America?

Sometimes when I am working hard on my genealogy and other people’s genealogy, I almost panic!    What happens to my work when I am gone? Who will take it over? What happens to others work when they are gone?   Same questions! Who will take it over?
Then I think – we have a great group of potential genealogists in the younger generation. For the most part we have not tapped that resource. What do we do? How do we get started?
The old saying hit me in the forehead!   How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!
There are several times a year I get requests from parents to help put together a “genealogy report” for school projects.     Again, I think – we are losing that resource of not training / teaching the youth how to start doing research!
This article could include a lot of pages; however, I will just highlight a few of my thoughts.  At the end of this article I will propose a suggestion.
First, does knowing about family matter?    How many times have we said and/or heard people say, “It is a family thing”?    “I inherited that on my father side? My mother’s side?” etc. etc.
Would our children benefit from being more in touch with their roots?
I came across some research showing that children who have a strong “family narrative” enjoy better emotional health.   According to psychologists Marshall Duke and Robyn Fivush of Emory University who asked 48 families 20 questions about family history.   What they discovered was the more children knew the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned!
What are some of the questions that can be answered by children to begin to grasp their roots?
  1. How did your parents meet?
  2. Where did your parents grow up?
  3. What about your grandparents?   (this is when they might start getting a little vague!)
  4. What is the origin of your surname?
  5. How did your family get to America?
  6. Where were they before they came to America?
  7. Time lines:   what went on before you were born?  Who was president? (I love time lines)   They really set the tone (place) in history where we are and our ancestors.
  8. What did you ancestors live in?
  9. What did the ancestors eat?
  10. What did the ancestors wear?

The list can go on and on.    This is what I call eating an elephant one bite at a time!

After the child has learned some of the things listed above and much more – then it is time to start learning to put things into a data base, gathering evidence, and putting things in story form.

This project is far reaching – A student can reinforce Language skills, social studies, geography, etc.

I have just given a brief overview of a heart throb I have and carrying a torch for!

How do we get started?

Sometimes churches have special interest groups who come in and teach things: scrapbooking, finances, etc. The same could be done for this project. Do you and/or your church have an interest in this?    We could work out the details.

Sometimes schools have the same thing.    Do you and/ or your school have an interest in this   We could work out the details.

Sometimes libraries have the same thing.   Do you and/ or your library have an interest in this.  We could work out the details.

This list could go on!     Home groups!

I would love to hear any feedback you have and would be willing to work with any group!   We need to be sure our family histories live on!
