Alternative Methods for Group Meetings During Covid-19
Covid-19 has changed our lives in a most drastic manner – communicating, traveling, working, shopping, etc.
Chris had just gotten our 2020 reunions posted on the Historical Hineston website. I know I have had to look at some of mine and rethink how and when we can have the reunions.
My family celebrates family birthdays on a monthly basis. How do we handle that?
There are so many what if’s! This is a new virus and we don’t know how it is going to behave and sadly we don’t know for how long. I know I can’t let my life stand still – I must continue with it – in possibly a new manner.
Therefore, we have put positive changes into effect to accommodate our social lives, our work lives, etc.
Some of these ideas may or may not work for you or your family; but if it does please give us feedback on what you did and what you learned from the new communication approach.
Here are some of the things we have done:
“Informal eating out” – There is a group of friends who meet monthly to eat out. We decided we would do just that – “eat out”. We decided to have Mexican food. Each of us got our food and at 6PM we all logged onto “ZOOM”a platform I will talk about later in this article. We ate, talked, laughed, and did our monthly “eat out”. True, it was different, but our social lives are being carried on. And, it was fun and enjoyable!
“Family Celebrations” – With such a large family, we have a lot of birthdays! 😉 Each month we choose a weekend and celebrate all that month’s birthdays. We did the same thing as above. Using ZOOM, we set a time and date where we all got together. The family who had the birthday – had the cake. We used different sites to get the person a present. Different? Yes. Did it work? Oh, yes!
“Family research” - Luckily for the most of us, we have been using a lot of online research apps / programs / and sites. There are so many webinars available and some of the sites are making a lot of them free during this period. We can use this period as a learning tool with all the available learning tools. If anyone would like some of the sites, please let me know. If you know of some of these sites, please share it with us.
“Online Book Clubs” – I belong to two online book clubs. The “leader” gives us a list of books for a few months ahead. At the appointed time we meet via Zoom or other platforms. They have been very effective!
“Family Reunions” – This, perhaps, is the trickiest of all. First not all the family has access to computers or other electronic devices. I am in the process of trying to experiment with this idea. I believe it can be semi successful. I will be able to give feedback on this later after we have done it.
“Genealogy Research Groups” – We have a DYESS research group who has met once a month for some time. Since about 2000 there has been about five of us Dyess researchers who make a research trip once a year. Due to some illness, and, other things, sometimes the annual trip cannot be made. So how do we keep up and share research problems and issues? Easy! We have a list of topics for discussion and we meet “online” via Google Hangouts.
I have mentioned a couple of platforms which can be used for group communications:
Zoom and Google Hangouts
There are others.
What is zoom? Some of you who we are Facebook Friends, you might have seen on my front page of a little birthday “party” with one of my granddaughters. Later this month, we will have another one with many more family members. The prior date didn’t work for some of the family. No problem! We won’t be travelling to Beaumont Texas, Lumberton, Texas, and Port Arthur, Texas. We will be meeting via ZOOM for this get together!
Zoom – if you use the free version, it will let you stay on for 40 minutes. Of course, paying for it will allow you to talk as long as you like! We have found 40 minutes is a good time. We have said as much as we know during that time period!
During this time, schools are meeting via ZOOM to teach the students. It is in real time.
Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop.
Here is the link if you want to explore more about it.
Google Hangouts – I have used this platform a LOT as mentioned above with the DYESS research study group.
What is Google Hangouts? Google Hangouts is a communication software product developed by Google. Originally a feature of Google+, Hangouts became a stand-alone product in 2013, when Google also began integrating features from Google+ Messenger and Google Talk into Hangouts.
Here is a link that is helpful if you are interested in Google Handouts:
Another platform is a long standing one:
Skype – which I am sure most of us have used.
There are others but I just wanted to touch on the two big ones right now.
I am interested in learning what you all are using! Also, would love to know how you are using the platforms.
During this time, use your creative skills to stay safe! I am afraid we will have a good period of time to deal with this; therefore, we need to learn new ideas!
