Longevity - This was my longest living direct line relative!
Jodie Dyess Marler – 2 Nov 1909 – 24 Feb 2011
d/o – J. B. “Josie” Dyess – Sarah Matilda Smith
gd/o – Edmond D. Dyess – Margaret Mathis
g-gd/o – Thomas D. Dyess – Nancy Jenkins
gg-gd/o – George W. Dyess – Elizabeth Everett
My dad, Oscar Carl Dyess, was in a family of ten children – only nine reached adulthood. Their ages at death were 72, 74, 84, 88, 90, 90, 94, 96, and 101. Fifty-five percent of the siblings attained ages of 90 or older. The only sibling who live to reach centenarian status, was Jodie Dyess Marler. Aunt Jodie was the 3rd child and the 3rd daughter. Longevity seemed fairly kind to this family; therefore, I am hoping to follow this trend. And, being competitive in nature, I plan on living longer than Aunt Jodie.
Because Aunt Jodie lived the longest, I am writing about her.
I always loved going to Aunt Jodie’s house. She usually had snacks children loved such as teacakes, divinity candy, and other goodies. She was a great cook and was known in the community for her chicken and dumplings. When there was “dinner on the ground”, funerals, or other get togethers, she always brought her dumplings.
The three girls were born before the seven boys. All the boys had a first name and a middle name. For some reason, my grandparents did not give the three girls a middle name. I never thought to ask my grandmother why.
The family attended a small church in the community called China Grove Baptist Church. Several years ago, one of our Wilson cousins gave me a copy of the original church records. As my cousin, Don C Marler and I were transcribing the notes to publish a book about the church, we discovered that Aunt Jodie served for a period as the church secretary. During that time, she was responsible for maintaining the church notes and records.
Each secretary would sign their name after entries they made in the book. I noticed that Aunt Jodie always signed using the name “Jodie Louise Dyess”, which really puzzled me. On one of our visits I commented that I did not realize that she had a middle name. She smiled her little mysterious smile and replied, “Everyone had a middle name and I felt left out. I liked the name of Louise; therefore, I gave myself a middle name.”
After a moment she looked at me smiling and remarked, “Isn’t it a shame I lied on the church books? But, I wanted a middle name!”
There is a story that has been passed down about Aunt Jodie. Her grandmother, Margaret Mathis Dyess, would stay with them. Granny Margaret smoked a little pipe and she would ask Aunt Jodie to “light” the pipe for her. That was all going good for Granny Margaret and Aunt Jodie until her mother, Sarah Matilda Smith Dyess, smelled the smoke on her breath. At that point, her mother thought Aunt Jodie was enjoining “lighting” the pipe for Granny Margaret too much. So, her mother put a stop to that, which quickly ended Aunt Jodie’s “smoking days”.
Someone once asked the question about how a relationship was to someone to our family. Aunt Jodie replied, “Don’t tell Carolyn! She counts cousins to the 32nd degree!”
Aunt Jodie passed away in 2011 at the age of 101. I sure hope I inherited the family’s longevity gene!
