YouTube Channels for Research

Since March 2020 a lot of things have changed. For the researcher’s libraries / Achieves / etc have been closed. However, during this time we have time with Zoom and Go to Webinar, etc to do our research and have much needed training sessions. So all has not been lost because I got to attend so many session online that I would not have been able to attend in person.

When the Pandemic will be in our rearview mirror, we will have a lot more resources than we had before.

I have not checked all the YouTube channels out but here are some that will help you with your researching while you sit at your computer.

Here are a few tips about what you might find and how best to explore the YouTube channels.

If you find the videos of an archive or genealogy source helpful, you might consider subscribing to the “channel” to receive notifications about new additions. Note: I have subscribed to several.

You can search on a specific channel to see if a video is named or described using a particular keyword.

Every YouTube channel is unique.

Other extensive archives (College/University) and repositories (Museums) maybe also have YouTube channels relevant to your genealogical research, whether focused on historical context or research resources and strategies.

Here is a list of some suggested YouTube Channels.

Georgia Archives

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuTblGyeCyuMZ-HekS5BKJw

State Archives of North Carolina

https://www.youtube.com/user/ncarchives
In this short video, State Archivist Sarah Koonts discusses the history and mission of the State Archives, as well as the resources available for researchers. Again, on this page are dozens of more YouTubes pertaining to North Carolina.

Library of Virginia (LVA)

https://www.youtube.com/user/LibraryofVa
Has orientation videos, those about its literary awards, records management, Archives Month 2020, family history, many in support of “We Demand: Women’s Suffrange in America”, and more.

Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH5bmWxLi5w
Relative to some of the other channels, this is a relatively small YouTube Channel; but, has a lot of information.

Louisiana State Archives

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2OxfARv2Fg
The Erbon and Marie Wise Genealogical Library, located on the first floor, is the public's primary link to the holdings of the Louisiana State Archives. It is within this library that patrons are provided access to the thirty thousand cubic feet of records stored in the State Archives, as well as books on general histories, census indexes, immigration schedules, church records, and family history.

Florida Memory

https://www.youtube.com/user/FloridaMemory
This channel has a great series of Florida Maps.

Alabama Department of Archives and History

https://www.youtube.com/user/AlabamaArchives
Some recent videos Research Rundown: 1867 and 1876 Voter Registrations and Research Rundown.

Texas Historical Commission

https://www.youtube.com/user/TxHist
There are channels like German Texans: Land, Freedom, Community and Hispanic Texas. A lot of fantastic videos for historical context.

Library of Congress

https://www.youtube.com/user/LibraryOfCongress
This is a vast channel covering everything from suffrage to current events to music to baseball to historical films to the National Book Festival and so much more.

US – National Archives (aka National Archives and Records Administration)

https://www.youtube.com/user/usnationalarchives
You will find public program videos as well as those about the archives and its operations and the series – Inside the Vaults – about its holdings. Each presidential library also has a YouTube channel.

Smithsonian

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYm9MWccmz9n2yyMx9vRrXg
Though the Smithsonian holds some records of genealogical interest, its real strength lies in providing historical context in support of our family history research

Brother Danny George and Thumper

The smell of Community Coffee saturated the kitchen. Poured my coffee bottle to the rim, picked up the 2 peanut butter & jelly sandwiches wrapped in a gallon freezer bag, and headed out to my truck. Oh what a surprise!!: a strong north wind and cool temps. “Thank You, Jesus”, erupted from my lips. “Amen”, came the reply from behind the black gum tree.  Thumper, my beloved beagle, was already awake. “Good morning, Thump”, I said as I shut the passenger door on my truck. “Morning,” he replied. “You know Thumper,” I began, “it’s opening morning of deer season. Used to be in my younger days, that opening morning was an exciting time. Opening squirrel season, opening deer season. Couldn’t wait for those ‘openings’ to happen.”  “ And now?,” Thump inquired. “Different”

as my voice trailed off. “ It’s hard to explain. I still love the outdoors and Nature; that’s still the same. But each trip I make now, requires a lot of ‘packing’...a lot of memories have to be stowed away before I can step into the ‘now and present’.  Memories of Daddy, Uncle Jake, and Uncle Elmo; of Will when he was a little boy, tagging along in my old black Dodge.”  “ I understand ,” replied Thump. I almost made the mistake of saying, ‘ how can you understand?”  Thumper continued, “ I too have that same problem. Oh what wonderful times, hunting rabbits with my sister Pea Vine, barking on the trail with the hound Cowboy, and running side by side with my brother Smoky.  He was the best! The best hunter among us and we all knew it! Yeah, I tried to take credit where I could and I so enjoyed the limelight! But my brother would shrug when

I began to stretch the truth snd give me that certain look when I crossed the line and went too far.”  The eastern horizon was  showing just a touch of color, daylight not too far ahead . “Thump”, I said, “another beautiful morning you and I can savor that our gracious God has blessed us with. Yes!...sometimes the rear view mirror is full and our hearts can get heavy as we remember so many we shared life.  But let’s you and I be thankful for the ‘breath of life’ and enjoy every minute of this coming day.” With a small grunt as I knelt to my knees, I hugged my beagle, as he in turn put a paw around me.  Yesterday-oh how beautiful the memories; today-how beautiful the promise. BLESSINGS in the Name of Jesus to you and your loved ones...
