THE 1950 CENSUS RECORDS
The Good News is -- The US Government made the 1950 US Census available to the public 1 April 2022.  However, the census is not fully available and/or searchable on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.com -- and -- sadly it is not complete.    If you are like me and can't wait, what can we do?

ANCESTRY
I searched for my father, Oscar Carl Dyess, Rapides Parish, Louisiana on Ancestry in the 1950 U. S. Census.   I found - Oscar Carl Dyess living in Hineston, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.    NOTE:   He actually lived in Otis, Louisiana in 1950; but, I will take Hineston.   Apparently, the Census Taker, put Hineston.

Then I did another step  to get the census - I went to the 1950 U.S. Census - to
Special Records Collections and Pressed 1059 under the U.S. Census Records.  Under National Archives on the right hand side of the page, I entered the state and Parish and since I knew the Census taker had put Hineston - I put Hineston.   Then I had some other choices to make:     I selected the following
  • "40-85  Police Jury Ward 5, Hineston - That part east of State Hwy. 21, north of State Hwy. 85 and west of State Hwy. 278"
  • I then had to go page by page until I found my family.   Next door to him going toward the Camp Eight Pentecostal Church was Trenton C. Bonnette.   This was my mother's (Edna Bonnette Dyess) brother.   On the other side of them was Cora Lummus, who was a Bonnette - Cora Bonnette Lummus.   She was a sister to Mother and Trenton Bonnette's father (Clifford Morgan Bonnette).   I saved the link to my family on my Ancestry Family Tree.
  • If you follow these instructions you will be able to find your family in the 1950 Census.

    FAMILYSEARCH
  • According to FamilySearch, the 1950 Census for the state of Louisiana is unavailable on their site ---well - not exactly - only 1%.    My location is not in the 1%.   I will keep checking back and forth to see when my area is available.

    NATIONAL ARCHIVES
  • On http://www.archives.gov/research/census/1950    you click "Search the 1950 Census"   On the page that comes up click   "Begin Search."   You can enter your state, parish, name and enumeration district.  I entered Louisiana, Rapides Parish, Dyess. There was only one Dyess who came up -

"She was listed in the Pinecrest State Institute for the mentally handicapped. Shows she was born in Louisiana; and, was never married; and, was 14 years old as of April 1950. "

I did NOT have her in my data base.  I did NOT know her!   She was born in 1935 - and - I assumed she would probably not be living and if she was what institution would be in?   What state? I spent days searching for her; and, finally found her!!!  She was in a group home in Baton Rouge.    I did talk to her and also talked to her.  She remembered her father vividly - he was killed in Natchez Mississippi when she was very young!    Her mother remarried and had a daughter; therefore,  my cousin, has no living parents, no living relatives that she knows of - but her half sister.   Her half sister takes care of her and I also got to talk to her.

My cousin is 88 years old and even though she has limited speech, I did get some family information.   Her dad was born in Mississippi, and, after he was killed and her mother remarried - they lived in the Baton Rouge area. My cousin was placed in Pine Crest and thank goodness she was on the 1950 Census Record. What worried her and her half sister - none of the Dyess people ever contacted them. I am sure they did not know what happened to them (her) after her dad was killed. Therefore, they were so glad to hear from me.

Me? I am so delighted I have her in my tree and her half sister sent me an up to date picture of her and she knows that the Dyess family didn't forget her. She is my 5th cousin 1 time removed!   For those of you who know about the Dyess genealogy, there were six Dyess brothers (Barnwell, SC). I am coming from the brother George W. Dyess; and, she is coming from the brother William Dyess.
If you do this search and have an unusual find or any find that you would like to share, I would LOVE to hear about it!!!

Now back to the 1950 Census Information ----

WHAT  I LEARNED FROM THE 1950 US CENSUS RIGHT NOW?
From the 1950 Census, I verified the information that I knew was a fact.  Where my parents lived, daddy was not a farmer; he worked for the State Highway Department and was a foreman and worked 40 hours a week.   (he also was a minister - that didn't show up in the Census)   Also verified the neighbors on both sides. By the way, I did my grandfather, J. B. "Jose" Dyess,  and learned some things I didn't know or had forgotten, etc. I have done quite a lot!! ;-) It is fun!!!

WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM THE 1950 US CENSUS IN THE FUTURE?
The 1950 census contains items 1-20 now.  However, the enumerators asked other questions for items 21-38 ( http://www.census.gov/history/pdf/1950instructions.pdf )   pages I-476---I-483  the list of other information you can learn is:
*Place of residence a year ago
*Lived in the same county/Parish a year ago
*County (Parish) and state lived in a year ago
*Birth country of parents
*Highest grade of school attended
*Was highest grade of school completed
*School attendance for those under age 30 since 1 February
*Weeks spent looking for work
*Number of weeks worked
*Wages and/or salary, income from farm or business, miscellaneous income for head of family
*Income for persons related to family head
*Military Service
*Description of last year's employment
*Married more than once
*Years married, divorced, widowed, or separated
*Total number of children born

CONCLUSION
The 1950 US Census can be a valuable tool once it is searchable and complete.   For now (as I have done and am doing) you can use the clues from what you find to further your research.

Again, if you find anything while searching that you would like to share, I would LOVE hearing about it.
