Since it is a New Year - I like to look over my past practices and my electronic usage,  etc - evaluate them and make changes if need to.

New Year - Fresh Start!

I could pick almost subject and have a long list of speculations about 2023!   But - for this paper - as you all have figured out --I  talk about genealogy!

What DNA would you, did you choose?
Do you want to knock down a brick wall?
Do you want to find a database that works for you and your research?
Do you want to organize your material?
Do you want to organize your work space?
Do you just want to start over?

Only you will have to decide what you want 2023 to look like for your research.   I am going to share a few tools - mostly DNA with their websites, Educational information,

In times past, I have discussed a few of these things; however, like everything else things change.

DNA ---- Each of the five major genealogy DNA companies have expanded their tools and we are getting better matches.   There are also some extra tools within each data base that is helpful.

~~~~~~~~~~Ancestry DNA - still has the largest data base.~~~~~~~~~~
*You see your matches
*You can connect to the places
*Ethnicity Estimates
*Message System to contact your matches
*You can search out other tools if you are interested more in using Ancestry.
At Present I have 101,660 Matches at Ancestry
They are broken down as:
**32,494 - Paternal
**27,637 - Maternal
**41,496 - Unassinged
**      33 - Both Sides
**There are quite a few pluses for me on using ancestry; however, One plus for me is Thru Lines.   If you have a match with a common ancestor, you get possible hints and usually they are right.  Sometimes they are wrong but it is a starting place.  I go to my DNA matches.   I use the following filters:
*Unviewed
*Common Ancestor
How many have seen a common ancestor - or a match - and there are NO trees, a Tree with seven people and all are private or a PRIVATE Tree.    The following example will show my match even though a person has a private tree.   True, I won't be able to see JMSSM1  tree; but, with researching tools, I should be able to figure out our direct line.
On the left hand side it shows that our Common Ancestors are on my paternal line:
John Bond
Eleanor Peyton
Right under John Bond's name it has a small writing that says:
"View Relationship"
By clicking that it gives my line on the left side and JMSSM1 line on the right side going all the way up to John Bond.
It is true I do NOT know who JMSSM1 is - but - by a lot of researching, I should be able to figure it out.
I couldn't get my snipping tool to work correctly, so I had to take two screen shots.  Hopefully, it will show what I am trying to say.   A picture is worth 1,000  words.
By using this I can go to my tree, starting at the top (John Bond) and filling in the people.
There are a lot more tools to use for Ancestry; but, I thought this one is so neat!!!
~~~~~~~~~~My Heritage DNA~~~~~~~~~~
*In addition to showing the ethic groups, you can share your DNA matches all around the world.
*There are a lot of tools to clean pictures up and do other neat things to them.   You can
*Has capability for  making family trees which is relatively easy  (I have a tree there also)
*I have done the MyHeritage DNA test; and,  made a lot of matches.  At Present, I have 1,602 matches at MyHeritage.

For the photo information, you can
1.  Colorize
2.  Enhance
3.  Animate (this is a fun feature).

Deep Story -
  • DeepStory is an incredible feature from MyHeritage that allows you to create an animated video of a person telling his or her life story. The DeepStory narrative is told by a speaking portrait of your ancestor or relative and enriched with details from the family tree and photographs that illustrate various life events.

AT Time Machine
  • AI Time Machine™ is a fun feature on MyHeritage that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create imaginary AI avatars (images) of a person as he or she may have looked in different periods in history.  We had a lot of fun with this! I did several - will share one where they made me a "British Lady".

~~~~~~~~~~23AndMe DNA TEST~~~~~~~~~~
I did the 23andMe test when it was mostly for medically; however, it is now limited medical plus ancestry information.  They also have
*Family Tree capability.   I have not worked a lot with this feature.
*DNA Relative Finder tool
*Ancestry Time line
*Message system to your matches
*I have made a lot of matches on this site also   At present I have 1,550 matches on 23AndMe.
They have THREE Packages and I won't go into the details of each one.   If you are interested go to their website and it fully explains each of the three options.
~~~~~~~~~~Family Tree DNA~~~~~~~~~~
*This was the first company that really started gathering DNA.   Until 2020 they had an annual conference each year.   I attended several of these.   In my opinion --- they didn't keep up with the mass advertising some of the other companies (especially Ancestry) did.
*They offer three distinct breakdowns that are very important (with their data bases).
*Family Tree Capability

yDNA - This is for MEN only --- They are the only ones with the yDNA.   It goes up the male line.   I have found this extremely helpful when you are working with an unknown male parent.   It has helped solve a lot of adoption cases or cases when a person finds out the person they thought was their father was not their father.    My dad, Oscar Carl Dyess, was the first Dyess male to do this test.    It took about 6 months to get a match because we had to wait on other males to take the test.    His DNA broke several brick walls for us and without it I am sure we would never have broken over those walls!!!    He was so excited to do the test and sadly he was not here when the first hits started coming in.
This company test men by "Markers"   I will post my dad's information here to give you an idea.
111 Markers (16)
67 Markers (102)
37 Markers (84)
25 Markers (862)
12 Markers (2064)

mtDNA - This is the maternal DNA -    Both men and women can take this test since both sexes have an X-Chromosome.  This goes right up the female line.     I know my hypostyle group and that has helped.   Again, in adoption cases and/or unknown parent this really helps.     By the way my hypotype group is I2 (Iris 2).     Does anyone else have that group?

Autosomal DNA -  This is what FTDNA calls Family Finder -- get results from both parents.
At the present time I have 7,508 autosomal DNA matches on FTDNA

NOTE OF INTEREST::::
I am the administrator of FOUR groups at FTDNA.   They are:
1.  DYESS
2.  Bonnett(e)
3.  McIlwain
4.  Rougeau / Rougeou

If you are interested or have any questions about these groups, please let me know.

~~~~~~~~~~Living DNA~~~~~~~~~~
*First partnership launched with FindMyPast
*They are suppose to have more matches "across the pond"
*I tested at the very beginning of their coming out.   They have been a little slow; but, their data base is good and I have received matches there also.
*At present I have approximately 7,508 matches.
*I have made some good matches here also.
~~~~~~~~~~Educational Tools~~~~~~~~~~
For the new year, you might want to refresh some of your genealogy world or learn some new things.

My favorite period in my life was going to school.  I loved it and if I could have earned a living going to school, I would have.   But - the real world doesn't work that way!   However, there are a lot of educational tools that helps to satisfy my "going to school" and I will share about four  of them.

1.  Barefoot Genealogist - Chista Cowan
I like to listen to her because she gives information about new things that are added to Ancestry.  She does work for Ancestry since about 2004; and, is very knowledgeable.     She also is on FaceBook and will answer some questions when we have them.     She is on YouTube and she has a weekly newsletter you can sign up for.   There are so many changes and it helps to have someone point them out so we can began to effectively use them.
Here Website is:

Her YourTube URL is:

2.   Elizabeth Shown Mills - Author and Lecturer
She has been recognized as "the genealogist who has had the greatest impact on American genealogy in the post-Roots era." Among her many notable accomplishments, she was editor of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly for 16 years.

Some of her Best seller books (which I have them all) are:
Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace - 3rd edition
Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians
Professional Genealogy: Preparation, Practice & Standards
Natchitoches Colonials: Censuses, Military Rolls and Tax Lists,
She has 1000s of articles written.

Her Personal websites:

3.  Connie Knox - Genealogy TV
Connie has 40 Years of Genealogical Research. - Career in television broadcasting. Currently the General - Manager of WILM-TV, Wilmington, NC. - Producing quality online video education, on Genealogy TV and NC Ancestry (both on YouTube) and social media.

Geographic Specialties

CA, NC, Mid-Atlantic, South, Raleigh

I like her YouTubes because they are on a particular subject, quick, clear, and gives tools to work with.   They can be free or can join ($$).    I watch it free on YouTube.

4.  Legacy Family Tree Webinars
This is one of my favorites!!!!!

It is the world’s most popular webinar website for genealogy and DNA testing, where you can enjoy a robust offering of live and recorded webinars presented by top speakers.  One of my New Year goals is to go and register for all the webinars that are available at the time.  A great source of knowledge!!!!   You can watch for free or you can have a paid subscription and can watch at your own time.  Handouts are also available.   It is $49 for a year; and, sometimes they offer specials.    To me, it is worth every penny!!

As you all know, this list could go on forever!  I just wanted to give a few tools to help you begin your New Year with a bang!    Knowledge is powerful!!!

If you have any suggestion, etc., please let me know.

Happy New YEAR - and Happy Genealogy Hunting for 2023!!!!
